Canva Craft Plans the Design Before It Makes the Image

Jump to a section

Canva released Canva Craft, its first in-house image generation model, on Thursday, October 22, 2026, TechCrunch reported. All Canva users can open it now from the Dream Lab tab. The model plans a design before it generates the image. Canva says this lets it produce accurate object details and legible text. That matters if you make posters, social posts or menus with words on them.

Canva’s research team built Craft to compete with image models from Google, OpenAI, ByteDance and Meta. The Verge adds Microsoft to that list and places Craft fourth on Design Arena’s leaderboard, a crowdsourced benchmark for AI designs.

If you already make your marketing in Canva, this new image option sits inside a tool you use. Here is what it does, what is still missing and what to try this week.

The short version

  • Canva Craft is Canva’s first in-house image model.
  • It works in two stages. First it plans layout, scale, hierarchy and text. Then it generates an image at up to 2K resolution.
  • It was trained on human-made Canva templates. Its images could be converted into layered, editable designs with Canva Magic.
  • It ranks fourth on Design Arena, behind three OpenAI models.

What Canva Craft does

Canva describes Craft as a two-stage model.

Stage one plans the layout

The model reads your prompt and builds a plan first. The plan covers the spatial relationships between elements, their relative scale and the visual hierarchy. It also holds information for any text the image needs. Canva says this approach gives “greater precision, consistency and control.”

Stage two makes the image

Next, the model generates the image at up to 2K resolution. TechCrunch reports 30 possible aspect ratios for different platforms, and The Verge reports more than 30. Canva says users would be able to make precise edits without changing other parts of the image.

What it is meant to make

Social media posts and marketing content are the obvious uses. Craft is also supposed to create realistic scenes, digital art, environmental imagery and more. Canva says it comes with “robust input and output moderation, privacy and safety controls, and reporting tools.”

Why training on templates matters for your work

Canva trained Craft on designs. Photographs were left out. The data came from what Canva calls “millions of human-made templates” in its library, including:

  • posters
  • social posts
  • presentations
  • infographics
  • menus
  • typography-rich layouts

That list matches the everyday jobs of a small business or creator. On a weekly offer post or a cafe menu, the parts that must be right are the words and where things sit. Those are the two things Canva says the planning stage targets.

From a flat image to a layered design

Because Craft learned from designs, its images could be converted into layered designs using Canva Magic, the company’s image-to-design transformer. Last year Canva released its own model that understands designs and layers. In April, it launched prompt-based editing, so you can create or change a design by describing it. It also brought layers to AI-generated images, which let you change one part and leave the rest untouched.

For you, that could mean fixing a price or a headline without generating the whole image again.

Where Craft stands and what is coming

Design Arena is a crowdsourced leaderboard for AI image generation models. Canva Craft sits fourth on it, behind three OpenAI models.

A ranking built from votes is a starting point. Your own side-by-side test on your own designs will tell you more.

Several parts of the launch are still planned.

Item Status What is known
Canva API Planned The model “will also be available” through the API
ChatGPT, Gemini and other AI agents Planned Support through the open Model Context Protocol (MCP)
Craft-fast Planned A cost-efficient version, due “soon”
Craft-ultrafast Planned A second cost-efficient version, due “soon”

The reports spell the first fast version two ways, Craftfast and Craft-fast.

Why Canva built its own model

Canva has used a number of outside image models for generation on its platform. TechCrunch judges it likely that the new model will help Canva save on API costs. Canva says that, besides costs, its own model gives it better control over quality and speed.

The model also draws on a 2024 deal. That year Canva acquired the media generation platform Leonardo.ai. Canva says researchers from Leonardo contributed to Craft.

On the business side, Canva was on track for $4 billion in revenue last year. It then cut its growth forecast for 2026. That caused its valuation to reportedly fall from $42 billion to $35 billion, in external analysts’ figures.

The sources do not link any of this to what users pay or to any change in plans.

What is still unknown

The sources leave several practical questions open. Keep them in mind before you build a workflow around Craft.

  • Cost and limits. The sources do not say whether Craft uses credits, has daily limits or differs by plan. That matters if you make images in bulk.
  • Exact specs. The two reports give slightly different aspect ratio counts.
  • Usage rights. The sources do not cover terms for commercial use of Craft images.
  • Your brand style. The sources do not say whether Craft uses your Brand Kit fonts and colours, so check that on one real design before you rely on it.

What to do this week

  1. Open Craft. In Canva, select the three-dot option in the left-hand menu, then choose Dream Lab.
  2. Prompt it for one real job with text in it, such as this week’s sale post or a menu board. Name the headline, the price and where each should sit.
  3. Read every word in the result letter by letter before you post it.
  4. Run the same prompt in the image tool you use now and compare the two. Google’s New Free AI Tool Transforms Images in Seconds covers one option to compare against.

Questions people ask

Is Canva Craft free to use?

The sources do not say whether it costs extra, uses credits or has limits on some plans. Check inside your own Canva account before you plan heavy use.

Where do you find Canva Craft?

Select the three-dot option in Canva’s left-hand menu, then choose Dream Lab.

Can you use Canva Craft from ChatGPT or Gemini?

Not yet. Canva plans to support image generation in third-party chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini through its MCP connection. No date has been given, so for now Craft works inside Canva.
